Evaluation:

My year 13 media project was based on Taylor Swift. I had to make a CD cover, booklet to go inside the CD cover and a poster to promote the CD. I also had to make a music video to go along with this. The song I choose to do was Taylor Swift ‘Should Of Said No’ This is a county and western pop genre.

In what does my media product, use to challenge forms, and conventions of existing media products?
My CD case does not challenge any codes and conventions as in order to gain ideas of how I would like my CD cover to look, I copied one of Taylor Swifts existing album covers. I had a close up as the main image which allowed us to see who the artist was and gain an insight to how she is likely to be represented in her music video. The fonts used were basic and simple easy to read, however I used effects to highlight the writing in order to make them more noticeable. I kept this theme going within my booklet as well.
However my Music video challenges the codes and conventions of pop/country music video’s this is because at the start of my video I used photographs fading from one to the other, I decide to do this as I thought it gave an insight to who is going to feature in my video and help the audience establish the relationship's that will be taking place.

How effective is the combination of my main product and my ancillary tasks?

My main task was a lot harder to produce then my ancillary tasks, as I had the Photoshop skills form last year, I was able to keep the same theme throughout my poster, CD cover and booklet. I did this by using the same fonts, colours and images (of the same person.) However when it came to my main task, I had to story board and look at other existing videos to work out the codes and conventions of county/pop genre’s. By doing this I was able to keep the main artist the same and put her in cloths she may have been seen in throughout the book. I think that both of my tasks were effective and worked well together, as it kept the same theme throughout.

What have I learnt though my audience feedback?

My audience feedback taught me a lot more then I thought it was. I was able to discover that my target audience was not just young/ older teenage girls but boys as well. I found this out though comments I received by people when I asked. I asked a lot of people what they thought of my video and some said they enjoyed it, yet some said it needed more work. This has made me more aware that if I choose to do a project like this in future I should prepare my time more wisely and carry out tasks in order to allow me time to change them. Quite a few people liked the fact I challenged the codes and conventions at the beginning and said that it worked well, they also said that the black and white shots have a dramatic effect and show how things were in the past.

How did you use Media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

In order to begin my media project I needed to use the internet to gain knowledge about other genres, I had to choose one I would like do for, for instance pop, rap, country etc. once decide I had to use sights such as YOUTUBE to look at other existing music videos to story board how I would like mine to look. Wail doing this all of my research was going onto my blog to keep it all together in a way that could be easily found. I used Photoshop to make my ancillary tasks, and as I said I had the knowledge from last years project so was able to make them to my full ability. As I had never used the editing software before I wasn’t to sure on how to do this, I think this reflects in my work. I would like to no more about how to edit and different ways in which I could do so.

Editing the video

Editing the video was a much harder process then i thought, i had to upload all my shots onto the video maker and then place them where i wanted them cutting them down when needed to be made shorter. I used a wide rang of close up shots in order to keep the codes and conventions of pop/country music the same. i challanged the codes and conventions by having pictures of the main artists at the begining instead of just the artist. i was able to get the hang of editing very quickly and was able to do things in which i didnt think i would be able to do.

Copy right:

Copy right is a set of restricted rights granted to the author or creator of an original piece of work, it also includes to copy, distribute and adapt the work. The rights can be licensed, transferred and/or assigned. Copy right lasts for a set time period after which the work that is said to enter the public domain. Copy right applies to a wide range of work that are fixed in a medium. Some people recognize the ‘moral rights’ of the creator and the work in which they produced, and giving credit when credit should be give.

In order to over come copyright for using an existing song, I had to write to the artist and ask her for permission to use her song ‘Should of said no’ I would like to make a note that there was no copy right intended throughout the project.

Day filming.

Today we went to Lornas house to film, we had to gain good proformance shots by adding props that are needed!
In order to film my music video i had to make sure everything was suitble, for example there was no random iteams in a shot. for instance a hose pipe. I asked Lorna, max and sammy to all film on the same day in order to allow me time to get my narative shots filmed as well as my proformance. I had alot of fun filming my music video. i had to ensure the lighting was correct and didnt make Lorna look to orange, and in order to make the rain on the window we had to get a hose pipe and hold it in one place. the camera stayed on its try pod in order to allow steady shots. we changed the cloths of the actors alot in order to show that it happened at diffrent times of the day.

Research codes and conventions

After looking at a wide rang of pop/county music videos I found that music videos of this genre often share the codes and conventions of music videos of any genre. By using close ups and mid shots you are allowing the main artist to be seen, they often have one main artist singing in the video, and maybe two or more people acting in the performance shots. There are lots of bright colours used in a music video of this genre as it welcomes the viewer in and stops them from becoming bored wail watching it. The main person singing the song is often very pretty and a woman. They keep the locations at a minimum and doesn’t allow the people watching the video to get confused on what is happening when it is happening.
Music video one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jb2stN7kH28

Taylor swift: Our song, Taylor Swift:

The song begins on a extreme close up of a persons feet, we see that she has bight coloured nail polish on, the next shot is a pan across her body, this helps us to establish that the person in the video is a woman, she has bight coloured cloths on welcoming the viewer. We then have a long shot of the woman; we see her whole body and see that she is on the phone. It looks as though she is sat on the grass lent up against some sort of table. We have a lot of shots of make up and dressing tables in which allows us to see that she is very careful with her appearance and likes to look good. The woman is wearing bright make up on her eyes, making her look pretty this is a traditional representation of women. We see a lot of close ups and mid shots within the first half a minute of the video. She is wearing a purple dress which again allows us to see that she is a very feminine woman. The shots used are often the same not making the video to complicate. There is no dancing just singing and looking at the camera. The shots are not shot and last about 4 seconds each. In this video there are no performance shots again making the video easier to make.

Music video two: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UkdRRxRp0bQ

Jessica Simpson: with you

The video opens with a wide rang of shots of the main artist cleaning the room. There are a lot of close ups, she is wearing the same outfit and singing at the camera, she is wearing a white top and jeans she looks very casual. This again is a traditional representation of a woman; she is stood in the kitchen which are often not seen in a music video. In this video there are far more performance shots, there are photos of the girl singing the song and the boy she is singing about, there are also clips of her looking at cloths. The woman is very pretty and is a traditional representation of a woman, the woman is not wearing much make up, making her look naturally pretty and welcoming, the song isn’t to fast and has well positioned shots to match the pace of the music.
Music Video Analysis

In order to gain knowlegde about how i would like my music viceo to look i had to look at other videos of the same genre and gain knowledge about the codes and conventions i must stick to.
Genre

One of the outcomes for this project is based on the music video i am producing. In order to do this i will need to think about whether i am going to challenge or follow the codes and conventions relating to the genre of music i have choosen to make my music video based on.

Certain researchers believed that is it important to follow certain codes and conventions relating to your genre type in order to keep the veiwer happy. How ever others disagreed and thought that it was a good idea to challenge the codes and convetions of the same genre in order to add new ideas and maybe changing the codes and conventions in the future.

I think that in my music video i will follow some of the conventions of pop/county music. How ever in order to make my music video more interesting i will challenge some of the codes and conventions.

In order to do this i will, use mid shots, and close ups alot of the time, and have shots that may often be seen in pop music songs such as shots in a feild.

Target audience
The target audience for the song I chose ‘Should of Said No’ By Taylor swift is middle aged/ older teens. Into soft county music. They may enjoy relaxing and chilling out to mellow music. Taylor Swift often sings love songs, so they may be in love or falling in love. The song isn’t very long yet has a hidden meaning behind it which the target audience may relate to. I often listen to Taylor Swift and I am 18 years old. I enjoy listening to her when I am on the move, I.E on the bus as it gives me motivation to travel place to place.
